About Vizianagaram

Vizianagaram is an important city of the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Vizianagaram literally translates to ‘city of victory’. It is an essential center for commerce and education of the state. Located just 42 km from Vishakhapatnam, it is slowly becoming the choice of many. Apart from being an important city of the state, Vizianagaram is also the district headquarters of the Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh. Vizianagaram district was formed on 1 June 1979. It took some parts of the neighboring Vishakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts.

History of Vizianagram

Vizianagarm was ruled by many Hindu rulers of the Kalinga dynasty up to the medieval times. After the fall of the Gajapathi Empire of Odisha, the governance came in the hands of Golkonda rulers. Experts believe that the ancestors of Vizianagaram empire are the descendants of Maharana of Udaipur. Some historians also say that the rulers of the region belonged to the royal Pusapati family. Bobbili Yudham is an important event in the history of Vizianagaram. The war was fought between the Maharaja of Vizianagaram and Raja of Bobbili in 1757.

Geography of Vizianagram

Vizianagaram is located at18.12°N 83.42°E. and has an average elevation of about 74 meters. The district is bounded by Srikakulam district on the east, Vishakhapatnam district in the west and south, Bay of Bengal in the southeast and the state of Odisha in the northwest. Nagavali is the main river flowing in the region. 

Climate of Vizianagram

The climate of Vizianagaram is characterized by high humidity throughout the year. The region receives a good amount of seasonal rainfall as it is benefitted by both the southwest and northeast monsoon.

The summer extends from March to May which is followed by the southwest monsoon. The monsoon season continues till September. In the year 2013 the average rainfall in the district was 1131 mm.

Agriculture and Irrigation of Vizianagram

Agriculture is one of the main occupations of the rural areas in and around Vizianagaram.

Demographics of Vizianagram

As per the 2011 census the total population of the town was 227,533 out of which 111,596 were males and 115,937 were females. The sex ratio was 1039 females per 1000 males which is much higher than the national ratio of 940 females per 1000 males. The average literacy rate of the town was 81.85%.

Economy of Vizianagram

Vizianagaram is an important center for commerce of the state. It is one of the main towns of Uttarandhra (North eastern part of Andhra Pradesh State). There are a host of medium and large scale industries within close proximity of the city. In total there are about 22 large and medium-scale industries with an investment of about Rs. 669.09 crores. These industries are the main source of livelihood for the people of the region. The industries provide employment to over 20, 000 people. The industries are primarily engaged in jute making, sugar, ferro alloys, sponge, iron and pharmaceuticals.
In addition to these, there are more than 4000 small scale units with an investment of about Rs. 115 crore. These units provide employment to approximately 32, 000 people. These units are mainly engaged in general engineering, RCC spun pipes, sawmills, motor workshops, aluminum utensils, groundnut oil mills, rolling mills etc.

Vizianagaram is also the hub for textile wholesale market. The country’s largest ferromanganese plant is also situated in the vicinity. It is located on the outskirts of Garividi. There are also many jute factories in Garividi.

Considering the close proximity to the coast and the 28 km long coastal belt, the region becomes a hub for maritime resources. The area of about 80.5 acres in the coastal villages is used for salt cultivation.

Roadways are the best way of transportation for short distance journeys. Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSTC) provides bus services to all major cities and towns of the state. Vizianagaram is covered on most of the bus routes. People can also hire taxis and auto-rickshaws to commute to different parts of the city.

Railways in Vizianagram


Vizianagaram railway station falls on the Khurda Road-Visakhapatnam section of the Howrah – Chennai main line. The station is also the terminus for Jharsuguda-Vizianagaram line. A lot of trains bound for south India have a stoppage at Vizianagaram.

The nearest airport is in Vishakhapatnam, 42 km away.
